Spinning:
a boost for endurance and energy

Indoor cycling as an effective full-body workout

The room is dimly lit, music pulses in time, and the group pedals in perfect synchrony. Spinning classes have long moved beyond mere trend status – they are now a staple offering in many fitness studios. The origins of indoor cycling trace back to the 1980s, when South African endurance cyclist Johnny “Johnny G” Goldberg developed a special training concept. His goal was to allow cyclists to enjoy the benefits of riding regardless of weather conditions or urban limitations. In 1993, he partnered with John Baudhuin to launch the Spinning® brand, revolutionising indoor training and creating a workout that remains popular worldwide today.

What is spinning?

Spinning is a structured indoor cycling programme performed on stationary bikes. In a typical session, a certified instructor guides the group through phases such as warm-up, interval training, hill climbs, and cool-down. The intensity is individually adjusted via the bike’s resistance, making it suitable for beginners and advanced participants alike. The combination of motivating music, group energy, and focused coaching ensures an engaging, high-intensity workout that keeps participants coming back for more.

What are the benefits of spinning?

Spinning offers numerous health benefits. It improves cardiovascular fitness, strengthens leg and core muscles, and promotes fat burning. The workout is also gentle on the joints compared with running, reducing strain on knees and tendons. On a mental level, spinning helps reduce stress, builds endurance, and enhances body awareness. Regular sessions can boost self-confidence and overall well-being. At the Belvita Leading Wellnesshotels Südtirol, a spinning class can be perfectly complemented by a soothing sports massage in one of our premium spas, allowing for recovery and deep relaxation after an intense ride.
