Meet Ötzi at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology

From the Ötztal Alps to the centre of Bolzano/Bozen

The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology – also known as “Ötzi Museum” – is probably the most renowned museum in South Tyrol, and for good reason. Since 1998, the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology has been exhibiting world-famous mummy Ötzi the Iceman.

In 1991, a relatively hot summer allowed a couple of German holidaymakers to spot the 5,300-year old mummy emerging from the ice of the Ötztal Alps. His possessions, including weapons, tools, and clothes made of fur and leather were also found at the site. This sensational find allowed researchers to break new ground in the study of prehistoric populations and habits.

If you wish to add a cultural twist to your holidays in South Tyrol, the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology is therefore an absolute must. Besides the mummy, a life-size reconstruction of the Iceman is also on display. A visit to the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology is quite an experience for children, too: while their parent visit the museum, they get to try their hand at building arrows and spinning wool, under the supervision of the museum staff.
