Energy healing:
gentle work on the subtle body

Ancient traditions that bring a person’s energy field into balance

The idea that a person is more than just their physical body is found in almost every culture in the world. In ancient China, the concept of Qi describes the life energy that flows through the body; in India it is Prana, and in Japan it is Ki. Energy healing is based on these traditions dating back thousands of years: a collection of practices designed to bring the human subtle energy field into harmony. Well-known forms include Reiki, which was founded by the Japanese monk Mikao Usui around 1922; Therapeutic Touch, which was developed in the 1970s by the nurse Dolores Krieger; as well as Pranic Healing and Quantum Healing.

What is energy healing?

In energy healing, practitioners work with their hands, either through gentle touch or a few centimetres above the body. The aim is to release blockages in the energy field and restore the free flow of life energy. A session takes place in a calm atmosphere: the participants lie fully clothed on a treatment table while the practitioner places their hands in specific positions on the head, torso, and limbs. Many people report feeling warmth, a tingling sensation, or a deep sense of relaxation. The effectiveness of energy healing has not been scientifically proven. It is expressly intended as a complement to, not a substitute for, medical treatment.

What positive effects does energy healing have on the body and mind?

After sessions, participants often report feeling deeply relaxed, having a better sense of their bodies, and experiencing greater inner peace. Studies on Reiki, for example, show evidence of reduced stress hormone levels and improved sleep quality in some areas; however, the research is considered preliminary. The most important effect, it would seem, lies in consciously taking a moment to pause: energy healing creates space for stillness, self-awareness, and letting go – qualities that are often neglected in the hectic pace of everyday life. As part of a holistic wellness programme, it helps people reconnect with themselves.
